Barron’s has a long article up about Blizzard’s corporate overlords at Activision-Blizzard, and as is usual with most pieces of Activision news, people will probably see in it what they want to see. Those who think Bobby Kotick is just a money-grubbing exploiter will find more fuel for their firey fanboy rage: apparently he’s a follower of Las Vegas casino entrepreneur Steve Wynn, and is modeling some of Activision-Blizzard’s business plan off of that guy, Shareholders, however, will probably be thrilled. In terms of a purely financial sense, Activision-Blizzard is apparently one of the shinest futures around, with Kotick bragging that videogames will eclipse film and TV in terms of moneymaking in just a few years.
From our perspective, as longtime fans and players of Blizzard’s games, the most interesting thing I see here is that Barron’s makes no distinction at all between Activision and Blizzard any more — the Activision-Blizzard company, according to the article, is equally responsible for both the Starcraft and Transformers franchises. Obviously, as gamers, we see a huge distinction between those two: one is a classic, storied,

From the “duh, but still cool” news department comes confirmation that there will be an in-game launch event for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, WoW’s third expansion.
Kisirani, your friendly neighborhood world designer, replied to a comment in the general forms today where a player said he’d be disappointed if there wasn’t a Cataclysm launch event. Kisirani replied:
*rolls up her sleeves and idly kicks the crates from last launch event under her desk*
We’re on it.
That’s confirmation in Blizzard speak.
Will it be as badass as the Lich King launching his forces into Stormwind, Orgrimmar, and the rest of Azeroth? My guess is that it’ll be at least 37 times as badass.

The trials and tribulations continue for Chinese MMO players, WoW, and its new Chinese provider NetEase. IncGamers is reporting that the beta of the game is continuing – effectively making the game free to play for those lucky enough to be taking part – while the Chinese government decides if enough changes have been made, such as the removal of corpses, gore and other unpleasant parts of the MMO experience, for the game to get a Chinese relaunch.
Since handing over the baton from from The9, things have not gone very well. After an extended hiatus which saw the game’s servers offline while the data was transferred over, the game is still awaiting the final go-ahead from GAPP (the General Administration of Press and Publication). The beta was originally supposed to last around a week but because of the delay has been going on for nearly a month. However IncGamers is also reporting that according to NetEase, all the internal testing has been completed and once the GAPP are done, the game should launch pretty quickly.

Ghostcrawler has posted an interesting little hint at the next patch (we know of) headed to the game. In response to a discussion about “tanking niches,” he talks about Icecrown Citadel over on the forums, and just happens to mention that people might think of tanks as waiting outside until “boss 4, 17 and 31 (yes, IC is that big).” 31 bosses? More like Icecrowded, am I right?
Blackrock Depths is the largest 5-man in the game, if not the largest instance, and it boasts over 40 bosses (that’s mostly counting encounters, though — you wouldn’t count The Seven, for example, as seven different bosses), including lots and lots of optional bosses and even a holiday boss. Ulduar, by comparison, has about 14, and Karazhan is about that same size (though that depends on how you count random bosses, like the Opera Event). No matter how you slice it, 31 raid bosses is a ton of bosses to go through — Icecrown could be a return to a really epic, large-scale instance.
Of course, there will likely be wings involved (Naxxramas’ Quarters have worked out pretty well, I think), and with the new changes to raid lockouts, Blizzard no longer needs

There was really just one topic on the show last Saturday, and it was patch 3.2. We finally went down all of the new features and class changes we’re expecting in the patch, and laid out (with the help of some of our chat channel folks) who was buffed, who was nerfed, and which classes are, in Turpster’s estimation, “rubbish anyway.” Alex Ziebart and Lesley Smith helped us decode some of the more complicated changes, and of course we answered your emails, including how the fishing daily can make you 4k gold, whether our characters are really getting stronger or not, and Blizzard’s problems with cosmetic items and armor dyes.
The show is available at any of the links below (or for listening right here on this page). If you haven’t yet subscribed to the show in iTunes (where you can listen to it for free on your iPod or iPhone), please do. And while you’re there, feel free to leave us a rating or a review — the more we can get, the better. Thanks for listening as always, and we’ll see you next week.
