The last time we posted about Brajana and her SPCA charity drive over on Mend Pet, she’d only just started it and was revving up to get a nice list of prizes going. Nowadays, she’s got a great list of prizes (including a free FigurePets set, a few good loot cards, some custom-made character artwork, and even a custom-designed UI — you can make yours look just like Turpster’s if you want), and she’s rolling into the last few days of the drive. It all ends on Friday, July 31st, so if you haven’t gotten your donation in to the SPCA International yet (the money will go to volunteer programs, including animal shelters all of the world, and help out with food, shelter, and vaccination costs), do so right away. And make sure to follow the instructions on Brajana’s site — for every donation you make, no matter how big or small, you’ll get two chances to pick up some of that great loot, and you’ll be helping out real-life pets all over the world.
It’s a great way to help out a worthy cause, give some back to the Warcraft community and the hard work that bloggers like Brajana do, and maybe even win some free stuff.

This is interesting — the costumes at BlizzCon have gotten more and more complicated every year, as people try to one-up each other by bringing the wackiest and biggest costumes to wear, both for the official contest and around the show floor (you can see some of last year’s appearances below). The big winner last year was this turtle mount, complete with wheels and a moving head, and so we wonder: what’ll happen this year?
Not so fast, says Blizzard. When a player asks just how far costumers might go (a live mount?), Bashiok says that there are some tweaks to the rules this year: costumes can’t go over 10′ in any direction, include “liquids or messy substances,” or be judged on items that can’t be worn or held. That would seem to disqualify the turtle mount, from official judging anyway — they want the contest to revolve around costumes, not vehicles.
Which doesn’t mean that we won’t see some crazy costumes on the show floor (and obviously you’ll see them here on the site, even if you’re not in Anaheim). But the contest itself might be a little more low key than last year — seems like the Sea

Zoltan of Aegwynn is the guy who’s been sitting on top of the overall achievement point lists for a while, and he’s just recently cracked the incredible total of 10,000 points. At the time of this writing, he’s finished off a total of 908 out of 931 achievements currently in the game, giving him a total of 10,005 achievement points.
The Champion of Ulduar is the one that put him over the top according to his Armory profile, and strangely, he doesn’t appear to have any of the Feats of Strength (edit: never mind, I read it wrong — he’s got plenty). He is only missing the two World Event achievements left (Brewmaster and the meta-achievement, neither of which are yet possible), the Sea Turtle achievement, and then a few more Heroic Ulduar endgame points. Given that the 3.2 patch achievements will likely come out before Brewmaster, there’s no way yet to clear everything completely, but he’s as close as it gets.
Very impressive indeed. Zoltan has just one or two people on his heels, and then the numbers drop out to a few hundred below 10,000 (and strangely enough, the top five players are all EU folks). There’s no reward for all

Jay Harding from ESL TV was able to catch up to Blizzard Lead Designer and the resident PvP guru Tom Chilton at the World of Warcraft Arena Tournament Regional Finals in Cologne, Germany last June and got to squeeze a decent length interview. Because of the focus of the event, Chilton talked a lot about PvP changes, particularly the impact of the upcoming Patch 3.2. Chilton, also known as Kalgan, expressed Blizzard’s intent on trying to keep different comps viable while taking small steps to curb the dominance of extremely popular comps such as RMP and cleave, which he stopped short of calling a “faceroll comp” (still goes to show he was thinking it, though!). Highlights from the video include:
Resilience – the change to Resilience in Patch 3.2 will make the greatest impact in Arena PvP, slowing down matches and likely impacting the effectivity of “burst” comps.
The nerf to the 2v2 bracket is intended to equalize class representation since 2v2 isn’t always a good bracket for all classes. Chilton mentions that “as the bracket size comes down, you lose a lot of those different synergies between different classes”
Chilton says,

Welcome to Ask a Lore Nerd, where each week blogger and columnist Alex Ziebart answers your questions about the lore and history of the World of Warcraft. Ask your questions in the comments section below, and we’ll try to answer it in a future edition.
This week I have a special request: I want any questions you might have about potential future expansions. Any questions at all are welcome, but I’m on a speculation kick recently, so next week’s column will probably focus on the future and then we’lll be back to our regular deal after that. So no matter whether you think the Maelstrom could be next or something else entirely, ask!
Mark asked…
“Any chance that the Vrykul will be a playable race in a future expansion?”
I very highly doubt it, but I wish for it from the bottom of my heart. There are only two races that would cause me to instantly reroll: The Vrykul or High Elves for the Alliance. Unfortunately, I don’t foresee us getting either of them. It would be a great day if we did, though.
losriot asked…
“I was wondering if there is a lore reason why the Argent Crusade uses Proto-Drakes as mounts instead of the more

Blizzard has opened up registration for their Movie, Original Song, and Fan Art contests, and you can register for those along all over on their registration page (the Costume, Sound-alike, and Dance contests are also there, but it looks like they’re not up for registration yet). These things are always a lot of fun, and it seems like every year, the bar goes even higher — there’s always a costume that just really impresses with the amount of work that went into it. Of course, don’t let that stop you from entering: Sound-Alikes are always really funny and pretty easy to do, and I believe Original Song is a new category this year, so it’s probably wide open in terms of what people will come up with. Come to think of it, we’ve actually got a song that might go in there…
Registration ends on the 24th of July for the current contests, so make sure to get your entries in now if you’ve got a movie, song, or a piece of fan art you think Blizzard might like. And there are some nice prizes — looks like the grand prize in each contest is an Alienware laptop, with Razer and Nvidia gear and Adobe software filling out the rest of the

Videogamer.com has a nice long interview with World of Warcraft Producer Tom Chilton about everything from patch 3.2 and the Argent Tournament to the future of the game at large. They caught up with him at the Warcraft Regional Finals 2009 tournament in Germany this past week, and in part one, he talks about the upcoming patch and what Blizzard is expecting to get out of it. He says the Isle of Conquest battleground is their most “epic-feeling” instanced PvP setting since Alterac Valley, and that they want it to feel nuts, with players fighting each other via air and land. He also mentions Arena, and says that it was originally designed to be “a fun side PvP activity” that they went a little overboard with during Burning Crusade. Finally, he talks about twinks, and says that neither Blizzard nor twinks, apparently, want to see other players crushed by those who have the time or money to max out their low level characters. Even twinks, says Chilton, want to see competition against each other, and the option to turn XP off will let them do that. I’m not sure I agree with that last one — many twinks seem to beef their characters up just for the

Blizzard put up a preview of a couple of Tier 9 sets over at the Under Development section of the official website, and they look pretty interesting. As previously suspected, the Tier 9 armor sets seem to share visual characteristics with the same armor class. In the examples that Blizzard shows, the Horde Shaman and Hunter — both mail-wearers — are similar in appearance. Two other examples are the Alliance Priest and Warlock, cloth-wearing classes, who look largely similar.
The good news with these faction-specific armor is that the design team has put a decent effort into making the sets somewhat distinguishable from one another. For example, the Horde Shaman’s shoulders are reminiscent of the Earthfury Epaulets from Molten Core, distinct from the chitinous design of the Horde Hunter. The Alliance Priest and Warlock designs are a lot closer to each other, however. But don’t take my word for it… head over to the Under Development page and check out the previews for yourself. I’m pretty stoked and can’t wait to see the rest of the sets!
